Both the southernmost and the westernmost city in the United states, Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and is considered the transportation crossroads of the pacific, connecting the east with the west. Since the mid 19th century Honolulu has been a trade center for goods such as whale oil, sandalwood, fur, sugar, pineapple and more recently has developed a thriving aquaculture industry. Tourism is also naturally a major industry, bringing in over $10 billion a year to the local economy.
